M-101 in Ursa Major

M-101 is another large galaxy near the Big Dipper.  In fact it's full extent is about the same size as the full moon as seen with the unaided eye.  At magnitude  8.3 you can see it as a fuzzy patch even with a small 90 mm scope, but it's surface brightness is very dim at magnitude 14 (dimmer than the planet Pluto).  This makes it a difficult object to image unless you have very dark skies.
