M-46 in Puppis

M-46 and M-47 are large open clusters in the constellation Puppis.  The best way to find them is to locate the bright star Sirus.  If you can see Sirus, you will be able to locate M-46 and M-47 in binoculars.   An unusual feature of M-46 is that it contains a Planetary Nebula NGC 2438.  This planetary is clearly visible in my image below.

This photo captures the full extent of M-46.  M-47 is also partially visible about mid-way down the right edge.  The Orion MAK 500 and the 35 mm film back make a nice combination for large field of view images.
