M-51 is about 3.6 degrees away from the tip of the handle of the big dipper.    You will probably need dark skies and a 6-inch scope to view it consistently.  The night I took these images I had dark skies for my location, and could just glimpse it's presence using averted vision with my 90 mm Orion MAK 500 guide scope.
