NGC 1999 is another large reflection nebula in Orion located just below the Great Nebula, M-42. The nebula itself is very difficult to see and just barely becomes visible in my images. The NOAO image is one of the best ground based images available and the HST image captures the detail around the bright star, which is about magnitude 10. You wont be able to see the dim outer regions shown in the NOAO image visually, but you should be able to see the bright star and the triangular dark patch visible in my images. For the dark patch, use 300-400 power and at least eight inch scope, larger if available. |
