Image processing is
probably the most important aspect of the hobby of astro imagining.
Having good equipment is important, but the best equipment in the world
will not turn out good images, if you are not able to process the raw images
from the CCD into the final product. I often spend multiple
hours on the processing of an image, trying to squeeze out just a little
more goodness.
This page is not a tutorial on how to perform image processing. Instead it offers you a link to some of my raw CCD images so that you can try out that aspect of the hobby, before expending thousands of dollars on equipment. Feel free to use the images for your personal enjoyment, but I consider them copyrighted and you will need my permission to publish them or use them in any commercial activity. Also, be sure to read the read me file. It contains some useful information. The files are zipped, so you will need an "unzip" utility to use them. You can download an evaluation copy of Winzip to "unzip" the files. Also, since they contain multiple raw images the are rather large. Most are between 800k to 1,000k. Each zipped file contains all of the files you will need to process the images. You can get the Starlight Xpress STAR 2000 software and the Astro Art software from their web pages as well. Make certain you get the MX-5C version and not the MX-5 version. I use the parallel port version, but the USB version should process the images. Click on the photo or the object name to download the files. Please only download what you intend to work on. That way I won't go over my monthly bandwidth allocation. Also, send me a copy of your processing results and tell me how you did it. I always want to learn how to do a better job. |
